The Great Decision

Editor’s Note:  This is part 3 from Discover the Power Within You, A Guide to the Unexplored Depths Within by Eric Butterworth.  This book is for Christians and Non-Christians alike.  It promotes the teachings Jesus brought to the world and says they are as relevant to us today as they were two thousand years ago.

“Know this, O man, sole root of sin in thee Is not to know thine own divinity!”  Author unkown

The great decision says Eric Butterworth is to Know Who You Really Are and to live from this place in every moment, every day.  Our only sin, says the author, is to not embrace our divinity   We are all “the only begotten son of God.”  Jesus said this and it is true.  If we are to realize our true potential, we must see our own divinity, embrace it, and live from a place of oneness with God in each moment, each day.

Next comes an explosive statement, “Christianity is not an end in itself” says Butterfield.  Entering the Kingdom of Heaven is the true destination and this cannot be found by joining a church.  “Conversion is not the end of the road," it is the starting point.  Being born anew – this is the objective!! Being transformed.  Living our life in a whole new way – co-creating with God, our Source.  We are implored to create a daily practice of knowing and affirming ourselves as part of our Creator, God/Universe.  Like the caterpillar, we are invited to embrace the truth of Who We Really Are, and transform into our higher state, a butterfly state, our higher state of consciousness

“Religion that does not promote transformation is no religion at all,” say Butterworth.  This is a revolutionary statement but what does it mean?  Our invitation is to see the great teaching and never lose touch with it – to realize our own divinity through “a radical and permanent change in our own consciousness”. Paul emphasized this truth when he said “Be not conformed to this world: but ye transformed by the renewing of your mind.”  [Romans 12:2 av]

And then, how shall we live our life?  What principles shall guide us?  Jesus said “What shall a man be profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and forfeit his life?” [Matt 16:26]  In our time of personal decision, what will we decide?  Shall we conform to the human standard or to a higher standard, the divine standard?  But what is the higher standard, the divine standard?  Butterfield says it is “to spring to the circumference of our being” to see beyond the edge of our own body to the edge of the Universe and Cosmos, to the edge of our true Self."   Serving our true Self always benefits the larger whole of life around us.  When we operate from true Self, we look beyond the desires of our body.

Now the question arises, how do we do this?  How do we realize our unity with God?  Butterfield says Jesus did not stop with knowing, he acted the part and he created the experience of knowing He was “the only begotten son of God."  Thus, we find Jesus saying “I and the Father are one…I am the bread of life...I the good shepherd..I am the resurrection and the life..I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life…I am the true vine.”  Jesus made these affirmations over and over.  I AM became more than an affirmation, it described the truth of Who He Was.  He perfectly aligned thought, word and deed and in doing so “climbed the latter of truth” and “overcoming."  This is both our challenge and our opportunity, to “see ourselves in a new light, the light of Christ and our own unique Unity with God” to “act as if I were and I shall know that I am."  This is the great decision and the profound invitation awaiting each of us.
