Seek to Express rather than to Impress

Several years ago, I sat with youth leaders as a young indigenous woman offered suggestions concerning our presentation to the community that evening. She suggested we “seek to express rather than impress”. This was a small but profound suggestion that I have come back to many times over the years.
I believe when we connect our heart energy with God and others, we naturally seek to express and we do so very authentically. God is love expressed so when we tap into this energy, we speak from our hearts and those listening can feel what is being spoken. There is no desire to impress. There is a quality of integrity and deep spirituality that is unmistakable. People naturally open their hearts when they feel real loving and authentic expression.
Expressing from connection with God is a form of expression that is still in its infancy so most meetings I attend are not primarily based on this manner of communication. Our mainstream living is presently more outer-world based, focusing more on financial goals and objectives, power and authority. It is easy to see how our communication can seek to impress when we come from this place. This can feel competitive and manipulative.
When we see the world around us as God expressing, our objectives become more inner-world based, we join with God’s essence and focus on all the magnificence around us—the divine and sacred interacting with the divine and sacred-- and our style of communication shifts to mirror what we feel. When we connect with God and each other, we are transformed. Our vibration is very loving. We extend blessing to everyone and everything. Seeking to compete and impress are foreign concepts. They have no place. Authentic expression is very natural and is received by others as something heart-felt.
The young indigenous woman who was present with us several years ago was profoundly correct. When our hearts beat as One, we express, we do not seek to impress.
All my love,
Steve
