In 2009, three people backpacked within the area comprising of Turkey, Iraq and Iran called Kurdistan. The often conflicted area is named for the ethnic population of the region, the Kurds. All of the hikers were accused of being spies and of espionage as they were taken in by the Iranian law enforcement. Sarah Shourd was luck to be a hiker that was let go as authorities could not decide for a while whether or not to really do it. Iranian law enforcement tried to get the U.S., who said no, to pay for her release with $500,000. Her fiancé was hiking with her and is still in custody.
